Can anybody add anymore?

A question was asked about reparations for slavery in the USA. Everybody says it was 200 years of slavery in the USA; am I adding incorrectly?

Great Britain recognized the sovereignty of the thirteen states in 1783, before that we were part of Great Britain.

The Civil War ended Slavery in 1864. By my calculations, that is 81 years. I said about 80.

So, what is going on? I have an MBA and a BSEE but I guess my old fart math does not work anymore.

Thanks in advance for setting me straight.
We have had slaves here since the 1600's. Jamestown and all
Because there was slavery before 1783 that is why.

Answers:
You are correct. There was slavery in the American territory before it became the USA, but the USA celebrated its bicentennial in 1976, and I'm sure slavery was abolished in the 1800's.

Damn you!! Now we'll have to cut down the remaining old-growth forests to print corrected history books!!
