Do you agree or disagree with this statement by Charles Schumer? Why?
I’m outraged. President Bush commuted Scooter Libby’s prison sentence wiping away two and half years of jail time with the stroke of a pen. President Bush ignored Libby’s felony conviction for lying to investigators, ignored the jury’s guilty verdict, and ignored the rule of law that governs our nation.
We expect more from our President. We expect honor and integrity, we expect moral leadership. We expect our President and his staff to be held to a higher standard.
I totally agree. Just because you have the Presidents ear, shouldn't mean you aren't subject to the laws of the land.
I disagree with this statement, Libby was just doing his job, he should be pardoned, not just have his sentence commuted.
I have to agree with JeffJ.
Not only was the whole process wrong from the start, but the prosecutor already knew Who made the supposed 'Leak' of the identity of the >Non-Covert< agent's name..and He still went on with the investigation.
It was, and still is, one of the most shameful, partisan, wasteful things I've ever had the displeasure to see.
T.S.
The president is first and foremost a human being, to be held to a higher standard is silly. The president has a right to commute sentences, although it is silly that he did this for Mr. Libby.
Answer:
I totally agree. It's within the President's jurisdiction to commute sentences, but the act ignores the ruling of the court, and I do not think justice has been done here. It looks like Bush is playing favorites, pardoning a friend. It's not unprecedented, it's not illegal, but I find Bush's actions appalling.
