Why are judges given an appointment for life or good behavior?
Best Answer:
It's so that they don't have to worry about losing their job for making a ruling that, while an interpretation of current law, is not popular with the people.
Only federal magistrates. At the state level they have to be elected every so often. And the thought behind the life appointment is to free them from corruption - if you know your job isn't going to be surrounded by danger because of how you rule, then you can't be bought off. (that's the suggestion anyway)
Good behavior? Never hear of that. For life is only for federally appointed judges.
Human frailty demands accountability. In Texas we enjoy a judge that has robbed law abiding citizens. Before William Wayne Justice become Lord our prison system was self supporting. Prisoners had to work, grow their own produce, grow their own meat, etc. Now they are pampered at the expense of taxpayers, I grasp.
